The third album from bassistsongwriter Thundercat is whimsical and somber, funny and meaningful, sometimes all at once. Drunk's oddball soul confronts the challenge of just trying to live life. Album 2017 23 Songs. R&BSoul 2017. Thats encouraging because the leftfield moments have always lent his jazzfunksoft-rock fusions singular charm-even here when he meows through A Fans Mail Tron Song Suite II. By those standards, the melancholy Walk On By , with its pensive verse from Kendrick Lamar, and Show You the Way -co-starring soft-rock icons Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins-feel irresistibly straightforward, but their velvet melodies are as beguiling as Bruners falsetto harmonies. Drunk is Thundercats third studio album, released on February 24, 2017 via Brainfeeder. From : The album is a 23-track epic journey into the often hilarious, sometimes dark mind of the Grammy-winning singerbassist and finds a few of his friends joining him along the way including: Kendrick Lamar, Pharrell, Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Wiz Khalifa, Kamasi Washington and Brainfeeder mastermind Flying Lotus. A funny story is I actually got this album by mistake!! My mam knows I like the Thundercats cartoon (remember that??) and she bought me this thinking it is the soundtrack. But it is not!! It is still quite good though. But be warned, this is NOT the soundtrack to the Thundercats!!!
furious ox
Does anyone else's copy have a "Disk 1 side A" on label on their disk 2? Both my disk one and disk two have the disc one labels, though they have different songs.
My copy of the set has both Disc 1 and Disc 2 labeled as "Disc 2". Like yours, all the music is correct throughout, just the labeling is wrong. Maybe we each got corresponding sides of a one-off mistake...?
Was anyone's copy missing a disk? Bought one brand new today, and it was missing disk 4.
Mine wasn't missing a disc but mine has the label for disc 2 on disc 1 and it was out of the sleeve.
The sound of my copy is amazing! And I love the packaging. It's definitely the most beautiful release is my collection.
I am sorry to see some comments about surface noise on this release. My copy is absolutely flawless all the way through, by far one of the best sounding in my collection. The red 10" records are fun on their own, but also come with their own sleeves AND INNER SLEEVES which are all designed in the classic weird Thundercat style. The small format also forces you to really engage with the listening experience which you 100% need to do to fully appreciate this album.Drunk is so strange that it may be tough to approach for some, especially if you go into this with any sort of conservative jazz mindset. The music is unpretentious with light-hearted bouncy melodies, but if you listen closely you find yourself in a very personal world of Thundercat's anxiety, fear, and apprehension about life. You get carried through the album by his cynical yet optimistic and humorous take on the world, underscored by a huge bold underline of weird. ONE CAVEAT, even if your records are perfect, the inside of the cover of the box itself is super rough cardboard. IT WILL SCRATCH THE FRONT OF YOUR FIRST SLEEVE VERY QUICKLY, like within a week. Put something in there as a buffer between the sleeves and inner cover. I used a folded up 12" outer sleeve until I figure out something more permanent.
Anyone has an explnation about Tokyo being different from all the other versions that can be found (Spotify, Youtube, Cd) ?
I thought it was just me. Sounds like a sample from a TV show.
I don’t listen to it as much as look at it..
What the hell is this all about? Talk about weird or what!
Bought this on listening to "A Fan's Mail( Tron Song Suite ll) and absolutely love it. Inventive, soulful, organic, musical beauty. Buy it.
This sounds amazing. I too have the issue with Kendrick's verse....but overall, this is a great sounding press. I was really dubious of red vinyl, but it really does sound great.
The only good thing about this is the cover...The music hurts
Are you kidding me? It's actually the other way around...
Can I play this 10” record with a regular stylus
Ofcourse man! Rip it up :Dword word word word word
Perfect package. Sounds great. Looks great. There is some crackle in some of the tracks I wonder if people are hearing this? This is meant to be there. Powerful album.

I usually don't go for these gimmicky releases but managed to get this for a great price... it sounds awesome! No issues with pressing quality at all on my copy. Very high quality pressing. I have to admit I kind of enjoy how each disc gets its own sleeve and inner sleeve. Very nicely done overall.
The cover reminds me of one of this one:
Since the first time I saw the Thundercat cover I have been thinking that they ripped off a little known album called Sounds Of Paris by Unlimited Project which to this day (seven years after its release...) is still is not listed in Discogs. Here's a link to the art work:
You're welcome to post it here. There are guides if you need help.
Heard all kinds of bad remarks regarding this release... But my copy sounds great. Weird.
Mine has some surface noize on some of the sides... Saying that, I just have to give myself to the outstanding music and thanking the artist for spirituality and greatness. Also for actually caring about the artwork, they way the music has to be listened to, the colors ...yer..everything.. One of the best releases for 2017 in my collection.
My copy has zero surface noise. Amazing album, who cares if you have to flip it 7 times, it's an experience just listening to it. Get it.
Wish it wasn't a 4xLP, otherwise I might consider making a purchase because this album would be great to spin for some background chilled out vibes to relax to.
Much better sound quality the more it's spread out....any LP over 40 min should be on two discs.
It does come with a download code so you could just pop it on your phone or something if you don't want to sit and listen through.
I wish they would release it as regular 12" LP and not this thick 10" box set.
Sound quality would not be nearly as good though. You know this right?
Sound quality would not be nearly as good though. You know this right?
This release is also labeled as a special edition. So who knows, hopefully the repress will be in a standard LP or 2xLP format. I hope so anyways because I'm not a fan of special edition releases, I'm ok if the wax is in different color, but to make a box set consisting 4 10" pieces and to pay for that much money, I'll pass.
Not to mention the price tag that necessarily follows such a format. Sheesh.
I know man, seriously. It's a good album, but it's not good enough to get up 7 times during a single listen (I think my math is right)
My edition just can't keep it closed because of the sleeves. Anyone with the same problem?
Mine seems to stay closed, have you kept the sleeve arranged as they were when you opened the box? First 10' face up, second face down, third face up, fourth face down. This cuts down on the bulk.
Yup, mine too. I keep it in the clear pvc 12" sleeve for picture discs, since the box set itself is very thick it fits right.
I use a loose scunci brand headband. Seems to work very well. Ideally I'd like to find a 10in box set sized plastic sleeve.
Album cover artwork looks like a homage to Grover Washington, Jr. - Mister Magic kind of... :)
black coffe
Actually it might be a homage to Gordon Parks classic photo in the serie "Invisible Man"... maybe not :-)
Hmmm, only mildly similar. Since the first time I saw the Thundercat cover I have been thinking that they ripped off a little known album called Sounds Of Paris by Unlimited Project which to this day (seven years after its release...) still is not listed in Discogs. Here's a link to the art work:
The background noise some people have mentioned seems to be part of the mix. I haven't compared it to the digital release but you can clearly hear the background noise fade out between the tracks and on the runin and outrun groove.
The noise present in that specific song is meant to be there and is present on digital versions as well.
A Fan Mail ( Tron Song Suite II) definitely haves vinyl background noises in the mix. I heard it on the vinyl version and on Spotify.
I'm afraid to open mine. There really needs to be a quality check for issues like this before released to consumers. It's unacceptable considering the vinyl prices these days. Especially a limited, deluxe edition like this.
No that's not part of the mix! My noise had the same character, appeared with music only. But I have also the CD and iTunes versions, and there's no noise at all, and (most importantly) I have now managed to replace the noisy vinyls and have a silent set at last. This is a quality issue. I just hope this affects only a few items.
Anybody know where I could get an outer sleeve for this 4x10" box set? I've only seen outer sleeves made for multiple 12" LP box sets.
My copy was sadly not perfect, the 3rd vinyl had awful background noise, I went back to the record store, got a new set and now the 4th disc has awful background noise. Does anyone else have the same kind of quality issues with this release?
Here also disc 3, unexceptionally level of surface noise. Other disks are dead clean.
My 4th disc has the same problem you described. However, the other three are dead quiet.
Still In Mind
Yes, my first disc has the same problem you described. However, the other three are dead quiet.

Nice packaging, clean, detailed sound - but 4 x 10" is hardly practical when it comes to enjoying the album as a whole - this format is actually a disincentive for me to sit down and listen to it. Can't see myself playing it more than 5 times. I knew this going in, but hey I'm a complete sucker when it comes to special, boxed-set red vinyl
Sound quality would not be nearly as good if this were on one (or even two) discs.
Yeah I agree. This really annoyed me about this release. Yet... I can still feel the impulse.
Having to turn a record over every 5 minutes is pretty silly.
My copy runs perfectly. Why 4 discs? No real reason but I suspect its to seperate the music into segments. It has 4 very artistically done covers for each of them which in itself describes the music within slightly. For example the album with Tokyo on it features a swirling jumble of kanji's on its inner sleeve, the 3rd vinyl has mostly breakup songs and features an insane amount of techno colors and a kitty cat on it, you can infer the symbolism here on your own. This isnt just for a good version of the music, this box set is a small piece of art.
Anyone else having issues with s-sounds in Kendrick's and Pharrell's verses (more like sssSSZSZTsZZTSS here and there)? Otherwise, this set sounds exceptionally good. Dead silent as well. Don't know, if that's the benefits from splitting it on four 45 rpm 10". However, having to drop the needle eight times, kind of makes me appreciate this album even more.
I'm experiencing this issue as well. I have a Project Debut Carbon, with a stock cartridge and stylus (Ortofon OM 10 cartridge, not sure what kind of stylus comes stock with this turtable). I have never cleaned my stylus, although I just ordered a Zerodust cleaner. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
It sounds like that on my not at all expensive setup, but the sibilance on only those parts is also noticeable on the mp3s in my car.
Yup, I have issues with this too. But the 2M Red - which I have too - is notorious for sibilance. Go figure. I get it a lot on Bjork's records too. Otherwise there aren't similar issues anywhere else on the album.
Technics SL-Q2 with an Ortofon 2M Red, adjusted by a pro. Never experienced any issues like this before, at least not with records that sound otherwise intact (like this one does).
I have not noticed any problems, what is your setup? Cartridge, turntable? Could be a setup issue.
4x10"?! why?!?! what is the benefit of this? can the people who buy records because it's their preferred format get a LP or 2xLP version? this is a perfect example of why people think records are just a gimmick.
art extends beyond the sound waves. not really gimmicky. however, I agree that a standard LP or 2xLP pressing would be a good idea in addition to the 4x10" because not everyone digs cool packaging (which is totally fine).
It's a gimmick but obviously it sells copies, just look around at the posts on all the new releases on discogs and see how people obsess over coloured vinyl versions. Personally, I would always rather have a nicely pressed black vinyl version that sounds great.
It's so you can play them all slowed down at 33rpm so it sound's even Drunker XDThat's what I like to do with my 10 inches anyways
it's only 50 minutes. it could be cut loud on four sides. eight is ridiculous.
Probably to cut it loud or something. Better than splicing it into 7"s xD
How many copies have been pressed? It says 'special' edition, not 'limited', so I'm just wondering...
