Album

When Philip Glass announced his next work would be based on works from the classic Brian EnoDavid Bowie album Low, critics assumed that Glass was running out of ideas and that he'd just run some of his patented major-scale runs underneath some recognizable pop music, another example of that darned modern music trying to be cool like rock. Symphony No. 1 Low, also known as the Low Symphony, is a symphony by Philip Glass based on David Bowie's album Low. In 1996 Glass based another symphony on David Bowie's following album Heroes, and in 2018 he based his 12th Symphony on Bowie's album Lodger, completing his trilogy of symphonies based on Bowie's Berlin Triptych. The symphony was composed in 1992 and scored for full orchestra with 2 flutes, piccolo, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, E clarinet, bass clarinet, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 3 trumpets. Main page. Philip Glass. The Low Symphony, composed in the Spring of 1992, is based on the record Low by David Bowie and Brian Eno first released in 1977. The record consisted of a number of songs and instrumentals and used techniques which were similar to procedures used by composers working in new and experimental music. As such, this record was widely appreciated by musicians working both in the field of pop music and in experimental music and was a landmark work of that period.
